SUCCESS STORY In 2010 Logie Durno Sheep won The Farmers Weekly Awards "British Sheep Farmer of the Year"Our business is based on the family farm at Logie Durno, 22 miles north of Aberdeen. This website aims to provide information on the farm and our sheep farming enterprise, giving details of our Charollais, Texel, and Hybrid flocks, as well as our pioneering on farm ram sale.
Over the years we have achieved much success in the show ring. Most notably in 2009 we won the most prestigious title on the Scottish show circuit, Interbreed sheep champion at the Royal Highland Show. This was won by Logie Durno I'm Your Man, an April born shearling ram sired by stock ram Crogham Hannibal. CURRENT FLOCKThe Charollais flock established in 1981 now runs 200 ewes. The nucleus flock of elite ewes are lambed in December to produce top quality stock for the pedigree sales. Our main body of the flock is lambed in April to produce shearling rams for our on farm tup sale. These lambs are born in April on a commercial system and are reared on grass, they are sold un-dressed and recieve no concentrates prior to sale. The Texel flock running 120 ewes was established over ten years ago, with the purchase of Muiresk bloodlines. They are run on a similar system to the Charollais' with the top ewes being flushed and lambed in February and the remainder lambing in April. Alongside the Charollais and Texel flocks we run 300 'Durno Hybrid' ewes, these are Hybrid ewes originally bred from our Charollais and Texel genetics. These ewes are all lambed in April producing rams with length, conformation and vigour. Finally we run 800 Lleyn X Durno Hybrids, on a very low input system. All ewes are lambed outdoors and receive no concentrates prior to lambing, each lamb is individually recorded and anything that has to be caught or brought inside is not used for breeding again. These ewes are kept to the same high health standards as the pedigree ewes and produce recipients for our flushing programs along with crossing rams which are availabel at our farm sale. Logie Durno stock is sought after the length and breadth of the United Kingdom from the Outer Hebrides to Devon, The Isle of Man and Ireland. |
